If I sign up for this program do I have to change my primary care physician?  I really don't want to have to change doctors.

This is a great question! Just like we wouldn't want to have to change our doctors, we wouldn't want you to either. Before signing up, we use a tool to check and ensure your PCP (and any specialists) participate in the plan. Generally speaking, we can find one of the plans for your doctor(s) to participate.  If we can't find your doctor using our tool, we will call your doctor's office and ask them if they participate in the plan.  If we can't find a plan in which your doctor participates, we recommend you stay with what you currently have. Sometimes, people are looking to change their PCP.  If this is you, we ask that you research who you'd like to be working with as your primary care physician, and we'll make sure that that person participates and takes on new patients before signing you up. The same goes for your dentist and eye doctors if you have current out-of-pocket dental or vision plans and want to stick with your providers.

I understand that this may be a Medicare Advantage Plan. I've been told to NEVER sign up for one as it would adversely affect my TRICARE FOR LIFE or my CHAMPS VA (??)

You are correct; this is a Medicare Advantage plan, and before about three years, most of these plans (and many still) would adversely affect your TRICARE for Life or Champs VA. A few plans are now out there specifically designed to work with TRICARE For Life and Champs VA and will not affect your already excellent coverage. These plans will augment your current coverage, give you additional benefits such as hearing, vision, and dental, and reduce your Medicare monthly cost. These are the programs which we are promoting and which you deserve for your great service to our country.

I've read into some of this before, and it looks like signing up for one of these plans might give me a co-pay. Because I have TRICARE for Life or CHAMPS VA, I don't have a co-pay. If I sign up for one of these plans, will I have a co-pay?

Great question! Because these plans are designed to work WITH TRICARE for Life and CHAMPS VA, it will not affect your co-pay status. If you read a book or see a pamphlet that says, "co-pay," you can ignore that because your service-connected plan (TRICARE or Champs VA) will cover that co-pay. There may be a case where there is a co-pay for hearing aids, but this is the only place where there might be a co-pay, which is very insignificant compared to the cost of great hearing aids. What we have seen has ranged in the $250-$600/per ear for hearing aid co-pays, but this is for top-of-the-line hearing aids that often cost $6,000-$10,000 per ear.

A friend of mine signed up for one of these plans and it greatly affected her ability to continue with TRICARE for Life. It took her over a year to get her benefits back and cost her a significant amount of money during the time that she was without her military benefit. How do I know this won't happen to me? And further more, when I have contacted companies about how one of these programs might affect my military benefit, they tell me to not get involved.

Another great question! Buyer Beware is the best thing that can be said here. Before getting involved or signing up for one of these programs, be sure you are talking to someone who understands the military plans that work with TRICARE and Champs. Many programs exist, and most do not work with the military plans. You must work with an agent or company (such as Veterans Service Benefits) that understands these plans. It's easy to find an eager agent who looking to make a sale. Be sure to ask if they know what they are doing, or better yet, contact us, and we can help you through it. These programs are now available for you, and we have them ready for you to join. Please take advantage of the benefits that have been long overdue to you.
